Golf Clubs Help
Wednesday, September 1st, 2010If you’re in the market for a new set of golf clubs and need help in deciding on the makeup of your set, consider adding hybrid clubs to your bag. Hybrid golf clubs are a combination of fairway woods and irons, making them versatile weapons in your arsenal.
A hybrid club has a club head that is similar to a fairway wood, with a low center of gravity that can help to get a ball airborne. However, unlike fairway woods, hybrids have shorter shafts like irons, which make them easier to control. Consider swapping out the long irons in your golf set with hybrid clubs. They will help you to hit the ball farther and with more control than hard to hit long irons, which require greater skill to hit.
Anti-Slice Golf Instruction
Monday, August 30th, 2010A slice for a right handed golfer is a shot that starts to the left of the target line and veers off quickly to the right. Most amateurs suffer from the slice, causing them to shoot bad scores. One of the fundamental tenets of anti-slice golf instruction is that the slice is caused by an open club face. However, with modern cameras and physics, it has been shown that this thought is flawed.
Indeed, the main cause of the slice is a closed club face, which causes the ball to start to the left initially. What imparts the slice spin is the path of the club head relative to the club face angle. In the case of a slice, the path is too out to in, which imparts the spin.
Use Muscle Memory to Train Your Golf Swing
Saturday, August 28th, 2010When learning to swing a golf club or trying to improve your swing, practicing the technique known as muscle memory can help you improve your swing. A repetitive motion, done over and over will eventually become a natural motion. You will not have to think about it, so, you can concentrate on other aspects like ball placement or proper club selection.
A good approach to golf swing training is to add weight to the club. You can either buy some small weights that slip over your club or simply swing two clubs at the same time. When you swing with the weights, it might feel a bit awkward. After a while you will adjust and the swing will be more natural. Remove the weights and you’ll be able to swing faster and generate more clubhead speed.
A Golf Tip Just for Women
Thursday, August 26th, 2010Most women can not hit a ball as far as a man. To compensate for the basic difference in physical strength between the sexes, women usually play from a tee that is considerably shorter to the green then the men’s tee. All other aspects of the game are unchanged. If a woman has 180 yards left to the green, she may have a difficult time getting the ball all the way to the hole. Instead of carrying all the usual irons in your bag, you might replace your 3 and 4 iron with a 5 and 7 wood. These clubs are actually easier to hit off the fairway and can get you greater distance than an iron. A 7 wood has the loft of an 8 or 9 iron, but can hit as far as a 5 iron.
The Perfect Golf Swing
Tuesday, August 24th, 2010What is the perfect golf swing?
You start with a set up whose whole purpose is to make you swing back straight away from and then back onto the target line, and still stay in the swing plane. At the halfway point of your backswing, when the club shaft is starting to move up, the shaft should point directly toward the ball. At the top of your backswing, the shaft should still be on the same swing plane and pointing towards the target. From the top of this great backswing position, you can drop the club into the slot, letting it accelerate just enough to reach a clubhead speed that isn’t too fast and isn’t too slow.
That’s the perfect golf swing.
Tips for Curing Your Golf Slice
Friday, August 20th, 2010True, today’s drivers allow you to hit the ball further. But, are your drives trailing off to the right, off the fairway… You’re slicing the golf ball, you’re losing distance, and you need some golf tips.
A slice happens because you’re swinging down on too steep a plane with a clubface that?s open at impact. To fix a slice, try this golf tip. Do some practice swings with the driver head a foot or so above the ground. Keep your arms and hands loose so that your hands turn over as they pass the center of your body and the clubhead moves over the ball. When you try a real swing, remember these tips, and your golf ball will move toward the middle of the fairway.
Golf Tip
Tuesday, August 17th, 2010A classic golf tip that was espoused by the late Harvey Pennick, one of the alltime greatest teachers of golf, was “Take Dead Aim” In his “Little Red Book” on how to play golf, Pennick said you should always take dead aim at your target and you will score better. Many golfers have been taught to play it safe and aim for the wide side of the green instead of trying to hit the flag. By doing that, you may avoid some trouble, but you will also lower your chance of making a birdie. The object of the game is to get the ball in the hole in as few strokes as possible. Any extra stroke used to get in a better position for your next shot only lessens your chance to get a low score.
Did Harvey Penick write the best book on golf?
Friday, August 13th, 2010Having played golf since the age of 5, it’s hard to say which has been the best book on golf I’ve read over the years.
If I had to choose one however, it would be Harvey Penick’s Little Red book. A great collection of stories impart great golf wisdom and there is something in that little book on golf for every golfer from a beginner facing struggles to hit the ball consistently, all the way through to Tiger and his current mental slump.
It’s not just a book on golf, it’s a book about a past time steeped in traditions and rules that teach a person much, much more than how to hit a ball.
It takes you back to a time before over sized drivers, rescue clubs or hybrids and when putting was about finesse and feel, not broom sticks and bellies.
