Am I Still A Beginner?

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

I have been playing golf for a little over a decade. I’m not the best golfer in the world by any means, but I would like to think that I’ve made enough progress where I can now be classified as an intermediate. The reason I bring this up is because my buddy Pat recently told me that I should consider taking a few beginners golf lessons. This was like being elbowed in the gut after a fun round of golf with a friend. That said, Pat is usually correct about these things. And if I want to make progress, I’m going to need to swallow my pride and take a few beginners golf lessons after all. This will definitely feel awkward at first, but my ultimate goal is to shove it right back in Pat’s face by destroying him on the course next season. He will wish he never gave me that advice.

Golf Chipping Tips

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

Chipping is a critical part of the game, especially for amateurs who miss a lot of greens. If you find yourself in a situation where you don’t have much green to work with and the ball is sitting down in the rough around the green, consider the following tips.

First, use your sand or lob wedge, which will let the ball land softly. Next, open your stance and club face slightly. By opening the face, you are adding loft to your shot. Opening your stance will cause you to cut across the ball, adding loft also. Next, address the ball on the toe of the club. This will create a glancing blow, which will make the ball land softly. Take a short stroke and watch the ball pop up and stop.

One Tip to Keep a Full Golf Swing Straight

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

A round of golf is full of many critical decisions about shot selection. Most shots will take a full golf swing to perform. Here is a quick look at how to accomplish a full golf swing and some of the shot types that require a full swing.

Most amateur golfers have a hard time keeping the ball straight. Sure, it starts out that way but will start to fade and ends up in a very bad place. Here is a tip to try that should eliminate that problem.

Check ball position. If the ball is too forward in your stance, then your shoulders will remain open and point to the left of the target. The way to avoid this is to always aim your shot using your shoulders. While doing so, keep the ball square with your shoulders and club face.

Anti-Slice Golf Instruction

Monday, August 30th, 2010

A slice for a right handed golfer is a shot that starts to the left of the target line and veers off quickly to the right. Most amateurs suffer from the slice, causing them to shoot bad scores. One of the fundamental tenets of anti-slice golf instruction is that the slice is caused by an open club face. However, with modern cameras and physics, it has been shown that this thought is flawed.

Indeed, the main cause of the slice is a closed club face, which causes the ball to start to the left initially. What imparts the slice spin is the path of the club head relative to the club face angle. In the case of a slice, the path is too out to in, which imparts the spin.

Tiger’s Golf Swing

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

The golf swing Tiger Woods has used since his return to golf this year has come under much scrutiny. Woods’ play has been considerably lower than his usual level and many people point to his golf swing as the main culprit.

The main problem of the golf swing Tiger has been using is that at the top of the swing, the club is laid off and pointing left. This makes it difficult for him to square the club face properly. When he swings from this position, he must hold off the release of the club to hit it straight. If he mistimes the release and leaves the face too open, the ball goes wide right. If he fails to hold off the club from releasing, he hits a big pull-hook.

Stop Hooking My Golf Shots

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

One of the questions that golfers ask themselves is, “How can I stop hooking my golf shots?” A lot of amateur receive bad advice about what causes a hook or a slice. One of the best ways that a golfer can stop asking himself, “How do I stop hooking my golf shots,” is to know what causes certain ball flights.

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not the club path from in to out that causes a hook. Rather, it is a closed club face. If the face of the club is pointed to the left, the ball is going to start left no matter the swing path. To stop hooking the ball, you have to make sure that your club face is square or open relative to the club path.
