You can teach yourself a lot about golf, but you need a good foundation.

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

I’ve taken a few golf swing lessons over the years, and they really helped my game, but for the most part, I’ve been self-taught. I think it’s good to get a mix of formal training, and self-instruction. Some golfers really need some personal tutoring to get started, but if you buy a few books, I think it’s possible to learn a lot about the game on your own.

I recently gave some golf swing lessons to a friend of mine, and I think they’ve really helped him out. Now that he has a solid foundation, he can probably teach himself everything else he needs to know.

Stop Hooking My Golf Shots

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

One of the questions that golfers ask themselves is, “How can I stop hooking my golf shots?” A lot of amateur receive bad advice about what causes a hook or a slice. One of the best ways that a golfer can stop asking himself, “How do I stop hooking my golf shots,” is to know what causes certain ball flights.

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not the club path from in to out that causes a hook. Rather, it is a closed club face. If the face of the club is pointed to the left, the ball is going to start left no matter the swing path. To stop hooking the ball, you have to make sure that your club face is square or open relative to the club path.

Mental Practice

Monday, May 24th, 2010

As novice and intermediate golfers, we require golf instruction lessons in addition to a lot of practice in order to raise the level of our game dramatically. There are many avenues available to us to get that training. Golf instruction lessons are available at the course, at the range, in books, on demand on our televisions, and even online. Online golf instruction lessons are especially convenient since they are so diverse, and they allow us to practice at any time of the day or night and from the comfort of our homes. Sometimes it takes some convincing in order for a golfer to believe that online golf videos can help him or her. People don’t generally respect the value of mental practice until they’ve experienced the results.

Golf Mantras

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Everyone knows that golf is as much a mind game as a body game, which is why there are as many mental golf tips as there are golfers. I’ve always felt that the best of the lot derives from the world of meditation. When you meditate, you repeat a mantra over and over. By doing so, the mind has something to focus on so that other thoughts are kept at bay and one can achieve inner silence. Likewise in golf the trick is to take all the mental golf tips you know and pick one. It doesn’t really matter which one it is. Keep that thought alone in your mind as you swing and your body will do the rest!

Fixing the unfixable

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

I’ve been playing golf for two years and I still can’t find a way to cure my slice! If this sounds like you, then don’t fret. You really are not alone. A lot of people have been playing the game for much longer and they find themselves in a similar position. If I’m trying to figure out how to cure my slice, the first place I’m going to go is to a professional.

Getting some real lessons is a good idea and it’s good investment if you are going to be playing a lot of golf. You will enjoy the game a lot more when the ball goes straight and you will save a bunch of golf balls, too. With lessons, you can start hitting it longer and you can shed strokes.

Chipping to a Win?

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

A lot of people talk about improving their golf short game. And the easiest way is to work on your chipping. Pick the spot near the hole that the ball needs to land on in order to set you up for an easy putt. Now picture a giant target there, just like the ones you see in the cartoons, with a bull’s eye and everything. That’s where you’re going to hit it. Just remember to account for how much green there is; a lot of green means you can hit it more directly and let it roll. Otherwise, let it try to bounce to absorb some of the momentum and not roll out of control. Practice this method a few times and you’ll find your golf short game greatly improved!

A golf swing Tiger would be proud of

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Many folks have taken up the game of golf in the last few years and a lot of that is due to Tiger Woods and his ascension to the top of the game. If you are looking for a golf swing Tiger would be proud of, then you need to start with the basics. A golf swing Tiger might look at and compliment will have power, but even the best golfers will tell you that it starts with technique and muscle memory.

A solid golf swing really begins with your grip and with your alignment. Until you have those things mastered, you can’t hope to consistently put good swings on the ball. For those players who struggle with this, it’s best to get some sort of lesson or perhaps watch a video to clear up the basics. From there, you can go to adding things like power, shoulder turn, and you can start shaping shots.

Golf Swing Practice

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Golf swing practice is normally done at a range. Although these are often called “driving” ranges, it is possible to practice other types of swings at ranges as well. If a person has access to a lot of land, he can also practice his swing there even if it is not specifically designed for golf practice.

Drives are the most common type of stroke practiced by many golfers. They want to strengthen their muscles so they can hit the ball a long way, as well as improving their aim. Practicing other shots, however, is just as important. Golf entails many types of swings, so they all need to be perfected for the best results.

With enough golf swing practice, it is possible for nearly every golfer to learn to strike the ball with acceptable strength and accuracy. Further practice will improve golf scores even more.
