Essential Short Game Tips

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Golfers know that a good short game can shave strokes off a score. Follow these golf chipping tips and your short game will improve:

One of the most important golf chipping tips is to let the hands do the leading. The reason for many messed up chip shots is that the head of the golf club beats the hands to the ball. This turns the chip shot into an upward strike instead of a downward strike.

The golf chipping stance is lower than the normal golf stance. Bend your knees and hips and choke up on the club. Your feet should be closer to the ball than during other shots. There should be no wrist action through the shot. The shot should be performed free and easy; let the momentum of the club do all the work.

Chipping to a Win?

A lot of people talk about improving their golf short game. And the easiest way is to work on your chipping. Pick the spot near the hole that the ball needs to land on in order to set you up for an easy putt. Now picture a giant target there, just like the ones you see in the cartoons, with a bull’s eye and everything. That’s where you’re going to hit it. Just remember to account for how much green there is; a lot of green means you can hit it more directly and let it roll. Otherwise, let it try to bounce to absorb some of the momentum and not roll out of control. Practice this method a few times and you’ll find your golf short game greatly improved!
