Did Harvey Penick write the best book on golf?
Friday, August 13th, 2010Having played golf since the age of 5, it’s hard to say which has been the best book on golf I’ve read over the years.
If I had to choose one however, it would be Harvey Penick’s Little Red book. A great collection of stories impart great golf wisdom and there is something in that little book on golf for every golfer from a beginner facing struggles to hit the ball consistently, all the way through to Tiger and his current mental slump.
It’s not just a book on golf, it’s a book about a past time steeped in traditions and rules that teach a person much, much more than how to hit a ball.
It takes you back to a time before over sized drivers, rescue clubs or hybrids and when putting was about finesse and feel, not broom sticks and bellies.
There’s Always Something to Learn
Monday, April 26th, 2010For lovers of the game of golf, there can never be too much time spent out on the golf course. For most of us, though, there’s also always something to learn and that’s where golf instruction comes in.
There are many ways to gain golf instruction that can help us to become better golfers. Some athletes benefit by utilizing golf instruction videos and DVDs that guide them in improving golf swings, putting, and tee shots, among other things.
Many prefer receiving golf instruction in person at their local golf course. Being critiqued in person and being able to have bad habits recognized and fixed with a golf instructor is invaluable in becoming a better golfer.
Golf instruction is sometimes costly, but it’s certainly worth it for anyone serious about golf.
Beginners can usually benefit from instruction, even if it’s not from a pro.
Monday, January 11th, 2010I have a friend who asked me for some help with his swing. I told him I was a bad person to ask, because it took me years to stop hooking my golf shots. My swing has never been my strong point, and I’ve always thought of myself as a short game guy. He told me that he isn’t concerned by how long it took me to stop hooking my golf shots. He is impressed with my swing and he wants to pay me as an instructor. I feel kind of guilty taking his money, but he is such a beginner, that he could probably benefit from what I could teach him.
What does a good book on golf read like?
Tuesday, December 8th, 2009If you were assigned to give a grade to a book on golf, then there are some very important factors that you’d have to consider.
Sports books are some of the most popular books on the shelves in general, and that is especially true of golf books. But when you’re choosing a book on golf, what sort of things should you look for? What sort of things set one apart from all the rest?
If you’re looking for a book on golf, then you need to decide if you’d rather have a book of technique or a book of stories. Golf stories are incredibly fun to listen to if they’re written by the right person, but some people would rather read a book on golf that would help them shave strokes off of their score. The choice is up to you, and it really depends upon what sort of reading you are looking to do at the moment.
Golf Swing Practice
Monday, September 21st, 2009Golf swing practice is normally done at a range. Although these are often called “driving” ranges, it is possible to practice other types of swings at ranges as well. If a person has access to a lot of land, he can also practice his swing there even if it is not specifically designed for golf practice.
Drives are the most common type of stroke practiced by many golfers. They want to strengthen their muscles so they can hit the ball a long way, as well as improving their aim. Practicing other shots, however, is just as important. Golf entails many types of swings, so they all need to be perfected for the best results.
With enough golf swing practice, it is possible for nearly every golfer to learn to strike the ball with acceptable strength and accuracy. Further practice will improve golf scores even more.
