Starting Your Downswing–the Moment of Truth

Friday, January 29th, 2010

The most important split second in the golf swing is the transition from your backswing to the downswing. That’s the moment of truth.

When you hit from the top (rush your downswing), your power and timing are destroyed. You should strive for an ever-so-slight hesitation at the top of your backswing before you begin your downswing. That sounds easy. It isn’t.

Your best method to develop the needed timing during the transition from backswing to downswing is to practice hitting full shots on the driving range. This is a difficult concept to master and it will take a lot of practice and focus to find the rhythm and timing that’s right for you.

Just remember one thing: don’t try and hit it from the top of your backswing.

Many folks have taken up the game of golf in the last few years and a lot of that is due to Tiger Woods and his ascension to the top of the game. If you are looking for a golf swing Tiger would be proud of, then you need to start with the basics. A golf swing Tiger might look at and compliment will have power, but even the best golfers will tell you that it starts with technique and muscle memory.

For those players who struggle with this, it’s best to get some sort of lesson or perhaps watch a video to clear up the basics. From there, you can go to adding things like power, shoulder turn, and you can start shaping shots.

Let us examine two of the most common problems encountered by golfers during their swing and find out how we can become better at our swing.

1) The first is keeping the head down. If you want to “top the ball”, you should not lift your head during a swing. A “Scrull” or “major top” will usually produce a bounding ball and will be devastating and impossible to control. It is important to practice keeping your head down until you hear the chip land, and at that time lift your head so as to see the result of your shot.

2) The second is practice hitting your club in multiple ways. For example take a full swing, a short chipping swing and a half strength swing. Practice makes perfect before any game and if you make a note of your practice swings then you will be apply what you have learned on the course.
